I took this photo while walking in Berkeley. I think it really sums up the creative, eclectic nature that is Berkeley.

The Ides of March

The Ides of March, or March 15th, refers to the date when Julius Caesar was assassinated. Shakespeare replayed the theme in his tragedy Julius Caesar, and ever since then, the ides of march have been associated with a sense of impeding doom.

While searching the Internet, I found some interesting links associated with the group “Anonymous”. Of particular note, is their plan to protest various Churches of Scientology around the world today. Apparently, Anonymous started getting huge after teh tom Crusie Scientology video came out. I am interested to follow this story and see where it goes.

In the mean time, check out the video Anonymous posted regarding the protests and their “mission.”

Vampire Weekend channeled Paul Simon in a big way with this tune.  The lead singer’s voice is reminiscent to Paul’s.

Compare to Simon’s “You Can Call me Al”

Great message, horrible commercial. While watching Outback Jack this evening, this commercial aired about 11 times. The music is corny and the whole-new-girl-has-no-friends theme is a little bit overplayed.

What exactly is The Foundation for a Better Life? My first thought was that this organization, like many other so-called “organizations”, was a front for The Church of Scientology. However, upon research I learned that The Foundation for a Better Life claims no affiliation with any religion.

However, the funding for the commercials and print ads comes from the conservative-christian-billionaire Philip Anshutz. Additionally, the ad agency that produces the media material also produces ads for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

One must wonder what the real aim of these ads are. I would love to believe that The Foundation for a Better Life has 100 percent altruistic goals, but for some reason I feel that there must be a back story behind it.

L.A. URBAN IDITAROD

Loud screams and chants of “ole, olee, olee, ole” filled my tiny studio apt just off Main St. in Santa Monica. I wandered out of my apartment and ran right into throngs of drunk people parading down the street. I asked someone dressed up as a dog what the deal was and they yelled back at me, “It’s the Urban Iditarod!”

The mass of people, dressed as doctors, firemen, the village people and other random charcaters, flocked O’Briens Pub and Rick’s Tavern. They left their spruced up shopping carts, which served as their makeshift dogsleds, lying in the street and sidewalk. It only took a few minutes for the police to make their way to the scene

The police grew in numbers. At one time I counted about 12 cars blockading Main ST. Soon the police were making announcements declaring the assembly unlawful and threatened arrest anyone refusing to vacate the scene. Onlookers were also threatened with arrest.

The main spot of  activity was O’Briens Pub. Decked out in riot gear, the police formed a line on Main. St. ready to move into the bar if things got out of hand.

The crowd of people dispersed and made their way to other bars lining Main St.

“It is the 2nd annual Urban Iditarod. It takes place all over America.” one drunk man told me. “It is a peaceful gathering, and we give money to the humane society.”

UPDATE:

Later that evening, while at Coffee Bean, a fight broke out on the sidewalk between two Uraban Iditaroders. One of the participants took cover in Coffee Bean when three police cars showed up. Main St. was popping on Saturday!
